Spring Tree Giveaway
April 17, 2010

Trees are so very important to our environment.  They give us oxygen.  They can shade our houses from the heat of the sun in the summer, and protect from the bitter winds of winter.    Trees provide birds a habitat and squirrels the nuts that they eat.   As more and more developments are being built, our trees are slowly disappearing.  So, again this year, I want to celebrate the tree.  The first 100 customers on April 17 will receive a free tree seedling.  There's no gimmick, no purchase required, no entry form to fill out.  Simply walk in the door, give me a smile, and you receive a baby tree (approximately 10"-12" tall).  Take it home to plant, water, and watch it grow.  I'm starting the day with four varieties (redbud, mountain ash, greystem dogwood, and flowering dogwood), but cannot guarantee which varieties will remain at any given time.   In fairness to all of my customers, I need to limit the seedlings to one per customer and simply can't reserve trees ahead of time.   I appreciate your understanding on these restrictions.  Please also be aware that this event is weather dependent.  These seedlings come from the Howard Nursery, a division of the Pennsylvania Game Commission.  They are grown from seed that has been collected in state forests right here in PA.  The trees can't be shipped until the ground is thawed enough to safely dig them out.  If any delay is necessary, I'll be advising via email and on the events page.

Celebrate Life
September 18, 2010

We are so incredibly lucky to live in a developed country.  In Angola,  the average woman only lives to be 39 years old, and the average man only 37.  In Afghanistan, they both can expect to reach only 44 years old.  Here in the United States, the average man will reach 75, and the average woman can expect to live to 81.  That's a huge difference, and a fact that we should all celebrate.  So, come celebrate your life!  Every party needs gifts, and the perfect gift is jewelry, so I'm giving away small silver charms to the first 41 customers.  Why 41? Because that's how old I am this year!  For those of you lucky enough to get a charm last year, this year's charm will be different, so come build onto your charm collection.  And there will be cupcakes. Probably not all day, though, because I just LOVE cupcakes. More acurately, I love to EAT cupcakes.   I will be showing NO restraint on the cupcake consumption.  So come join the party and celebrate life!

Christmas Arrives at The Silk Road
November 1

It's time for the Holiday decorations to come out in full force!  You've seen pictures of many of our nativities online...but now they are all out and on display.  From the coconut stable from Honduras to the recycled marbles from Chile,  some of these nativities are sure to make you smile.  Others are just amazing to look at with details that must have taken painstaking hours to complete.  I've made an effort to bring in the largest variety of nativities that I could find with regard to material, technique, and countries represented.  Some are breathtakingly beautiful...and some are, well, not so pretty...but they all have special character that makes every last one a treasure to have in any home.  Also arriving are ornaments from the far reaches of the world, handmade holiday greeting cards, stockings to hang, treeskirts, and decorations that put you in the holiday spirit.  Many items are limited in supply, so stop early for the best selection.

Silk Road Tea Party
December 11, 2010

On December 16, 1773, the Sons of Liberty staged a protest of monumental size.  They boarded three vessels, cracked open hundreds of wooden casks, and poured 45 tons of tea overboard.  This bold and daring move helped shift our nation towards independence.  A handful of people, determination, courage to stand up, and the world is changed.  At the Silk Road Market, we applaud those who are trying to change the world for the better.  So on December 12, in the spirit of the Boston Tea Party, we’re cracking open our teas.  Bring your favorite tea cup, or use one of ours, and drink up.  For all of us with ties to the British, fresh baked scones will be available as well.  So eat, drink, and enjoy browsing a variety of handcrafted items from around the world.    Come celebrate the bold and the daring from 10 to 5.
