Ceramic Nativity from Peru

The Ashaninka people are one of the largest ethnic groups in Peru. They are traditionally a seminomadic tribe (one that moves periodically) that lives in community units of 3-400. They live in small family dwellings made of tree trunks and palm leaves that surround a community house. Because they do move every so often, the decorative pieces in their homes are very limited. Those they do have are made with great detail, using very complex geometric patterns. Unfortunately, the Ashaninka way of life is in jeopardy. Between industrial deforestation and internal rebel violence, many of these community units have been forced off their land. Their farmlands are gone, taking with it their self reliance. They are now making figures such as this unusual nativity to feed their families. Alberto Aparicio Canchari hand formed and hand painted this particular nativity.
